Great NPR show about cyberbullying, sexual harassment and online mobs. Danielle Citron, professor of law at the University of Maryland and who has written about cyber harassment, offers the following about cyberbullying, cyberstalking and cyber mobs:

  • 80 percent of the people attacked online are women.
  • “Women’s lives are directly affected socially and economically.”
  • The attacks are designed to silence women, thereby depriving them of their First Amendment rights  “These anonymous mobs are silencing women. … Women are being forced off line. They’re be prevented from speaking.”
  • The sexual attacks reach far beyond the Web; they creep and ooze into women’s brick-and-mortar lives.

  1. Christy, you are attacked viciously when you tell the truth.

  2. Oh, yes. I’ve experienced it. My thickened skin can handle the fair stuff. But when people — including colleagues — revert to the below-the-belt sexual harassment, intimidation and stalking, well, that’s foul. Uncivilized. Boorish. And has no place in our society. And, yes, I am a free speech advocate. With responsibility accepted for that speech.
In the words of a favorite musician, Michael Franti, in his song, “See You in the Light:” “You want to scare away the vampires/you simply guide them into the light.”

Show your attackers for who they are, my friend. Sexual harassment is NOT an appropriate response for disagreement with a personal viewpoint. Call it what it is. And stand your ground.

    You’re in my thoughts.
