Newsday photogs 86ed; asked to reapply

Newsday axed about 100 jobs, including photographers and some sports columnists on Friday, according to a recent story. The photojournalists, 20 of them, were called into a meeting, told that their jobs had been eliminated and were invited to reapply for newly-titled jobs such as “Visual Journalist” or “Assistant Photo Editor.” But before you consider this a reasonable-sounding restructuring offer, consider that the 20 out-of-work professionals would have to compete with each other — friends, colleagues and workplace rivals — for SEVEN job slots, according to a National Press Photographers Association story. That’s only a choice in a Joseph Heller novel.
