Cash crop: Veteran$ Day

Leave it to retailers to cash in on nearly every morsel of American life. But a fur coat sale in honor of Veterans Day? It’s there, Sunday’s A section of the New York Times, a Macy’s ad to help you commemorate the day with a $7K spending spree on a beaver or mink coat. (Don’t look for the coat ad online, or much in the way of Macy’s fur coat sales. But if you google the retailer, you’ll find other sales.) Did I mention that Tuesday is Veterans Day?

Poppies are traditional for Memorial Day. Still, here’s “In Flanders Fields,” a tad early for 2009.

In Flanders Fields

by John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly.
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
